Pros

  • Magazine format is simple, attractive, and unique
  • Dozens upon dozens of content providers support the app
  • Enough extra features to keep users engaged and interested

Cons

  • Some users have called the app's stability into question
  • Setting everything up may prove time-consuming

Flipboard aggregates media content from dozens of sources for its users to view. Of course, many apps are based upon a similar premise. However, Flipboard succeeds by taking the aggregated content and displaying everything in a magazine-like layout. The app contains an intuitive and attractive user interface as well as various features. Users can customize nearly everything about their experience in seconds, too.

When a user opens Flipboard, they're asked to choose some interests and categories from a master list. From there, the app goes about curating and aggregating media content about those topics. Each category is then stitched together in a magazine format with a cover story and various articles afterward. Users will find the entire experience pleasurable, and rarely will they encounter hiccups or problems with the content.

Flipboard manages to succeed because it gets the little things right. For instance, each piece of content is taken from its original source and stripped down. Users are presented with a cleaned and polished version of the original content. If something is missing, then they're able to open up the original article or media. Without a doubt, Flipboard looks good and presents users with content they're likely to enjoy.

So, what's the catch?

For now, Flipboard's main issue revolves around the stability of its Android app. Many users complain about force closes and unresponsive apps. Various improvements have come in updates over the past few months, but stability issues remain. Otherwise, a user may feel a little overwhelmed while creating all of their magazines. Flipboard makes it easy to navigate through magazines. So much content isn't always a positive, though.

In the end, this particular app succeeds by doing something unique with content aggregation. Countless media outlets and organizations support Flipboard, so users won't run out of content in their magazines. The app looks incredible, and the magazine-like layout plays into its favor. Compared to similar apps, Flipboard manages to stand out and comes with few downsides aside from stability problems.
